Protecting Marine Biodiversity

Protecting Marine Biodiversity

The burning of fossil fuels is heating our planet to unnatural and unhealthy levels.Byproducts from burning fossil fuels get trapped in our atmosphere, polluting the earth. This is having devastating effects on marine life. Scores of fish, plants, bird, and coral reefs are dying off. This is not only an issue for maintaining healthy ecosystems, it is also important to note the economic impacts this pollution is having. This article will cover ways for protecting marine biodiversity as well as the economic impact if we do not.

Human beings have the responsibility to protect marine wildlife. A great way to do this is to limit the amount of fishing that can be done. Another great way is to invest in clean energy. Wind, solar, and water power are all sustainable sources of energy, and the way of the future. These small changes to our economy can have positive lasting effects. It may be too late to turn around the pollution that has happened over the last 200 years, but we can attempt to try.

Protecting Endangered Species

Protecting endangered species is also mandatory. Legal implications should be sever for anyone hurting protected species. Dumping drugs, trash, and waste into the ocean needs to be viewed as a criminal offense. Proper disposal channels need to be found. If none can be found, then the toxic waste needs to be eliminated and healthier organic formulas need to be invented and produced in their place. There is no time to waste on these changes!

Responsible Fishing Practices

Poaching and aggressive fishing techniques make it hard to impossible for a species to replenish itself. There are rules and regulations about how much can be taken out of the ocean before fishermen can continue fishing. If these practices are not respected, then extinction is possible. This interrupts the food chain, creating more damage.  Here is a video on overfishing and how we can stop it.

Economically speaking, the world is losing so much by abusing the planet. One industry that has seen the effects is the commercial fishing industry. Oil spills, run-off, agricultural fertilizers, and more have polluted the waters killing off edible fish such as cod and flounder. It is estimated that 300,000 people have lost jobs in this industry, fisheries have collapsed, and over $8 billion in revenue is gone.

The world is in a dangerous position, and we are the steward of it. If we continue to burn fossil fuels and refuse to move forward, the world may be destroyed. The entire food chain will come crumbling to its knees if marine life is destroyed. If that happens, men will eventually follow. The more diverse marine life is, the healthier our entire planet will be.

Conserve Marine Life

Marine resources are generally the things that animals, plants, and we human beings require for life that originate from the ocean. Most organisms that essentially need the marine resources for survival thrive inside the marine ecosystem. However, some land mammals and birds also get food from the ocean.

Marine conservation is the preservation and protection of ecosystems in the seas and oceans. Conservation of marine life mainly focuses on limiting human-propelled damaged to marine life, and on restoring the already damaged marine ecosystems. Also, marine conservation focuses on preserving vulnerable marine species.

Why should you conserve marine life?

The diversity and productivity of the world’s marine life are a vital interest and of importance to humankind. People need air to breathe, food to eat, water to drink, new medicine, a conducive climate we can live in, beauty, recreation, and inspiration. Oceans are the Earth’s largest life support systems since they are the largest ecosystems on Earth. To thrive and prosper comfortably, we all require healthy oceans.

Oceans generate half of the oxygen human beings breathe. Oceans also absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and consequently reduce the effects of climate change. Additionally, oceans provide a sixth of the animal protein we human beings eat and they are the most promising source of new drugs and medicine to combat bacterial diseases, pain, and even cancer.

How can you conserve marine life?

It is the smart thing and the right thing to do when you conserve marine life. You can conserve marine life through a number of ways:

  • Help take care of the beach– whether you enjoy swimming, surfing, diving, or relaxing on the beach, always clean up after visits. You can explore and appreciate the ocean life without interfering with the marine life or remove coral and rocks. Further, you could participate in local beach clean-ups and also encourage others to respect and conserve the marine environment.
  • Support organizations working to protect the ocean– Many organizations and institutions are fighting to preserve and safeguard marine wildlife as well as ocean habitats. You can find a national organization and even consider giving financial support, advocacy or volunteering for hands-on work.
  • Travel the ocean responsibly– you should practice responsible kayaking, boating, and any other recreational activities on the water. You should never throw anything overboard. Further, if you are set on taking a cruise, you should do some research to find the most eco-friendly option.
  • Educate yourself and those around you about marine life– As seen, all life on earth is connected to the ocean and its inhabitants. Once you educate yourself and others about the issues and problems facing this essential and vital system, the more you will want and be inspired to help.
